A "Capitol" Experience

July 11th, 2025

“An inspiring week full of discovery, connection and leadership growth.” That is how Georgia EMC summed up the 2025 National Youth Tour Leadership Experience in Washington, D.C., back in June for the 116 Georgia student-delegates including four from OREMC—Emma Dillard, Troy Medcalf, Emory Popham and Micaela Vazquez.

They experienced the history, culture and legacy of Washington, D.C., as they explored iconic landmarks, memorials and museums. Four delegates had the very special opportunity to lay a wreath on behalf of our group at Arlington National Cemetery’s Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.  They also had an unforgettable day on Capitol Hill engaging in thoughtful discussions on current events and civic responsibility. They even met, and took a selfie, with Senator Raphael Warnock on the Capitol steps.

Students also toured Mount Vernon, the World War II, MLK Jr., FDR and Jefferson Memorials, and attended the U.S. Marine Corps Sunset Parade at the Iwo Jima Memorial.

Meeting so many different people and getting to know them and where they plan to go in life was a highlight of the trip for Micaela. She said, “I loved being able to learn more about America and connect with the people around me.”

The biggest lesson for Troy was, “Everything is earned, not given. Seeing all the memorials and monuments helped remind me of the sacrifices and hardships the people of this county went through to get where we are now.”

“I had such a fun week and enjoyed getting know more people and reconnecting with old friends from other statewide youth events,” noted Emory. “It just goes to show you how important it is to meet people, because you are likely to see them again at other events.”

Emma summed up the trip saying, “I’m so thankful to have gained new experiences and met so many amazing people. I saw and learned so much about our government during my time in D.C.—from touring the Capitol to hearing from wonderful speakers. It really opened my eyes to how our government works and how young people can get involved.”
