OREMC Donates Over $11,000 to the Southeast Cancer Unit, Inc.

October 8th, 2020

Surprised. Overwhelmed. Grateful. Those are all words to describe Linda Henderson’s reaction when she saw the $11,114.53 check Okefenoke REMC presented to her to benefit the Southeast Cancer Unit, Inc. The volunteer organization was the beneficiary of the proceeds from the 29th Annual Okefenoke REMC Golf Tournament held on September 26 at The Lakes Course, Laura S. Walker State Park in Waycross.

Originally scheduled for May, the tournament had to be postponed due to the COVID-19. Despite the delay and the ongoing pandemic, the event was a sell-out with 96 players and 52 sponsors including: Oglethorpe Power/Georgia Transmission/Georgia System Operation as the Links Sponsor; Altec as the Towel Sponsor; Southeastern Bank as the Golf Ball Sponsor; Asplundh and Pike Electric LLC as Cart Sponsors.

“We are extremely grateful to all of our sponsors and players who ‘chipped in’ to make the tournament a success,” said Michele Hutchins, OREMC member communication/marketing coordinator.  “When we postponed the tournament back in May, we weren’t sure what to expect. But it turned out to be a wonderful day of fellowship and fundraising.”

OREMC General Manager John Middleton added, “We all know someone who has been impacted by cancer. The funds we donate to the Southeast Cancer Unit stay right here in our community helping those in need, when they need it most.”

The Southeast Cancer Unit, Inc. is a volunteer organization helping cancer patients in Brantley, Pierce and Ware counties with medical expenses while undergoing cancer treatment.
