Afternoon Storms Rip Through OREMC Service Area Downing Trees and Lines

April 23rd, 2020

Best described as barreling east from Waycross, Georgia, following Highway 82 through Brantley County and on to the coastal areas, mid-afternoon storms left a trail of downed trees and power lines through Okefenoke REMC’s service territory.

The storms have resulted in 51 reported outages leaving 2,400 OREMC consumer-members without power. Brantley County is the hardest hit area, followed by Camden and Charlton counties. All OREMC crews are responding along with contracted crews from Pike and tree crews from Asplundh. Additionally, five crews from Satilla REMC will be coming to assist OREMC as soon as they have restored power to their consumer-members.

“It is all hands on deck,” says OREMC Operations Manager Travis Page. “Trees have been uprooted and wires are down throughout our service area so there is a lot of clean up that has to happen.”

While another line of storms is forecasted to move through the OREMC service area overnight, crews will work into the night as long as it is safe to do so, restoring power as quickly as possible.

Located in west Brantley County, Georgia between Hoboken and Waycross, this is just one example of the many uprooted trees causing damage and downed power lines in the OREMC service area following a line of severe storms that moved through the area this afternoon.
